Throw Darts’ 2025 World Matchplay Preview

The iconic World Matchplay is back…

…and here at Throw Darts, we couldn’t be more excited. Taking place at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool from July 19th to 27th, it’s one of the big darts tournaments of the calendar year; a perfect mid-summer blast before the players lock their sights on World Championship preparation.

Whether you’re a seasoned player, a social darter who loves the thrill of the lanes or just here for the drama, the 2025 World Matchplay has something for everyone. Also, it’s part of the PDC triple crown (the World Championships and the Premier League are the other two), so it’s not one to miss out on!

At Throw Darts, we’re here to break down who’s in form, who might be suffering a drier spell and who could be the dark horses of the tournament. All whilst preparing to keep a keen eye on the players’ set-ups so that we can bring you the latest advice on the most up-to-date darts changes.

Who are the top players going into the World Matchplay?

Now the keenest of darting fans amongst us will have a good idea of who to expect will make the later stages of the prestigious tournament. But for those of you who might be new to the sport or simply enjoy dipping in and out of big competitions, we’ve got your back.

Luke Littler

At just 18, Luke Littler is turning heads and stacking titles. But you already know that. The reigning World Champion and now the 2nd seed at the Matchplay, Littler is the young gun everyone’s talking about. He’s fearless, consistent and known for clocking 100+ averages with an uncanny ability to finish under pressure.

Luke Humphries

Holding the number one seed and last year’s World Matchplay winner, Luke Humphries is all about steadiness and big-stage nerves of steel. While he’s had some ups and downs this season, his experience on the Blackpool oche makes him a formidable opponent.

Gerwyn Price

You can’t talk 2025 darts without mentioning Gerwyn Price, the ‘Iceman’, who brings raw energy and mental grit to every match. Recently winning the Poland Masters, he’s shown he can adapt quickly, even switching darts mid-tournament and still averaging over 103!

Dark horses & rising stars

That’s the current big three covered. But it is common in sports, and darts especially, to see upsets along the way. For example, Irish amateur player Michael Flynn stunned three-time world champion Van Gerwen in the 2024 Players Championship. Now, whilst we’re not expecting an upset that dramatic, who could outplay their odds this year?

  • Stephen Bunting
Bunting had a stellar year with a big win in Bahrain and consistent top-tier averages. A former Lakeside champion, he’s rediscovering his best form at just the right time. Whilst he might not be considered a dark horse being ranked 4th in the PDC world ranking, he’s always a fans favourite with his charismatic personality and superb walk-on.
  • Damon Heta
With two Players’ Championship titles under his belt this season, Heta’s calm, methodical style makes him one of the tour’s most reliable competitors and a real threat in long-format matches.
  • Ryan Searle
The laid-back thrower with serious punch, Searle’s rise has been fuelled by consistency and underrated grit. He’s quietly become a fan favourite for his no-nonsense approach.
  • Josh Rock
Still early in his pro career, Rock plays with a fearless edge and explosive scoring power. He’s one big win away from a proper breakout and it might just come in Blackpool.

Throw Darts predictions

Before we sign off, here’s a little fun from the team, our predictions on the 2025 World Matchplay winner:

Ed: “Nathan Aspinal always makes the later stages of big tournaments and is usually a rock-solid pick. He won the World Matchplay in 2023 and I can see him repeating that success this year.”

Dave: “The Flying Scotsman, Gary Anderson, has always been a favourite of mine. The two-time world champ has hit form again this season, winning the European Darts Grand Prix in May. He could go close.”

Pete: “James Wade played brilliantly to end his nearly three-year wait for a PDC ranking title winning the Players Championship last month. If he reproduces that performance, he could go close.”

George: “I’m really enjoying the energy that Heta is bringing to his games. If he keeps playing with a smile on his face, then I’m confident that he can go a long way!”

What can you learn from the pros?

The World Matchplay isn’t just about who lifts the Phil Taylor Trophy, it’s a masterclass in dart technique, gear choices and mental toughness. Watch the different grip styles, dart weights, barrel shapes and throw styles and think about what suits your game. Here’s a quick takeaway from what we know already. But keep your eyes peeled as darts is an always-evolving sport.

  • Lightweight & versatile: Like Littler’s setup, great for players who like to adjust their grip mid-throw.
  • Balanced & smooth: Humphries’ straight barrels offer steady release for those who prefer consistency.
  • Power & control: Price’s scalloped, front-weighted darts suit players who throw hard but need grip security.
  • Precision & tight grouping: MVG’s front-loaded, ringed barrels cater to those chasing needle-like accuracy.
