Inside Academy Darts: What to Expect & How to Level Up Your Game
If your child has a passion for darts or is curious to give it a go, there’s no better place to start than with academy darts…
But what actually happens at an academy darts session? How do players learn, improve and measure their progress?
In this blog, we’re giving you a full look inside the Throw Darts Academy: how it works, who it’s for and how our brand new 1–180 Programme helps young players build confidence and take their game to the next level.
What is Academy Darts?
Academy darts offers a structured, safe and inclusive space where young players can learn the fundamentals of the game. From how to hold the dart properly to throwing with consistency, darts at academy level is all about building strong foundations and having fun while doing it.
At Throw Darts Academy, sessions are led by a PDPA-qualified coach (that’s Professional Darts Players Association), which means every child benefits from expert instruction and proven techniques used by the pros.
We welcome all children, no matter their background, experience or ability. Everyone starts somewhere and everyone is welcome.
The 1–180 Programme: How Young Players Progress
Learning to play darts is exciting, but it’s even better when you can see your improvement. That’s why we’ve introduced the PDPA developed 1–180 Programme at the academy: a clear, structured system designed to help players grow at their own pace.
What is the 1–180 Programme?
The programme includes eight colour-coded stages, each focused on different skills and progress markers, from mastering scoring zones to improving consistency and match play.
Each stage is broken down into clear, measurable targets so players (and parents!) can track development over time. It’s a fantastic way to build confidence, focus and motivation.
The 1–180 Programme is led by our PDPA-qualified coach, providing expert guidance at every stage. This qualification also allows them to formally assess each level and award certificates to players who successfully complete a stage.
Darts Levels – Tailored for All Abilities
Whether your child is picking up darts for the first time or already playing in local leagues, we cater to a range of darts levels:
- Beginner – Learning the basics: grip, stance and throwing action
- Improver – Developing scoring, aiming and accuracy
- Advanced – Focusing on match play, tactics and pressure handling
The 1–180 Programme ties into these darts levels, helping each player advance in a way that suits their ability and ambition.
An Inclusive, Supportive Environment
We strongly believe that darts is for everyone and our academy darts programme reflects that.
We welcome children of all genders, backgrounds and abilities. Whether your child is shy, outgoing, sporty or just curious, we create an environment that is friendly, non-judgemental and fun. Everyone gets a chance to throw, learn and feel part of the team.
And if your child prefers to learn in a smaller setting, keep an eye out, we’ll soon be launching 1-to-1 coaching for all ages.
